What to Expect

Surgery is an emotional experience for any child of any age, and the family support and home care an important part of the healing process. These types of procedures may also involve several steps. Dr. Blocksom and the nurse coordinators look as all aspects from the physical changes to how each step will positively affect a stronger self-image and better health. We are family-centered program and very passionate about what we do. We focus on strong communications and the holistic needs of each child and the family.

At your first appointment, you and your child will meet one-on-one with the Dr. Blocksom for a consult appointment.

Please be sure to bring:

  • A list of all your questions
  • Any medical images, lab results, and medical reports as part of your child’s medical history
  • Health insurance card

If x-rays or other medical images were done through St.Vincent or Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, those records will be digitally accessible to the surgeon. If you have a disk or hard copies of related images, please bring them with you.

After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Blocksom will discuss the treatment options and whether surgery is appropriate and recommended for your child.

We never rush these appointments. We aim to answer all of your questions and will explain how the surgery will be performed, what care your child will need after surgery, and long-term expectations.

If surgery is indicated, you and your child will meet with Dr. Blocksom for a pre-surgery appointment. General anesthesia will be given. Please tell us if your child or anyone in your family has had an adverse reaction to anesthesia medications.

After surgery, there will be follow-up appointments with Dr. Blocksom and other pediatric subspecialists and therapists involved in your care. At each appointment we want to ensure your child is healing as expected and will update the progress and identify next steps.

If at any time you are concerned or have questions about your child’s post-surgical needs, please call our office.
