When a child has a sleep disorder, overall health suffers and so does the family dynamic and sleep quality of siblings and parents. Leyla Akanli, MD, a board-certified pediatrician, pediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist provides a family-centered approach to treating sleep disorders. As the medical director of the Peyton Manning Children’s Sleep Disorder Center at St.Vincent she works closely with her colleagues at the Pediatric Pulmonary Center and other specialists at PMCH to help prevent and treat chronic health problems that can evolve from having a sleep disorder.

“Sleep disturbances, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), are common in children and can result in significant health problems if left untreated… All children or adolescents who snore regularly should be screened for OSAS. Additional symptoms can include labored breathing during sleep, disturbed sleep with frequent gasps, snorts or pauses, and daytime learning problems.”

There are many types of pediatric sleep disorders and we provide a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating all of these conditions.

  • Daytime excessive sleepiness and cataplexy
  • Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS)
  • Problems falling or staying asleep
  • Pediatric insomnia
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep terrors and nightmares
